A Few Words onVideo Editing with Carolyn Brigit Flynn

by Marigold Fine

Writers, Poets, Artists, Musicians, yes, even audience members –

You who showed up and shared yourself on the magical night of November 8, 2008 –

Who allowed your words and images to be captured by two video cameras –

Not knowing whence or whether they would surface and be shared with the world.

Please know this . . .

You have been tended with loving care through the patience and commitment of Carolyn Brigit  Flynn.

I, who thought myself something of a Virgo perfectionist have met my match!

Writers –

She watched closely as you stood up, walked to the podium, and shared your wisdom. She      made sure that the enthusiastic applause with which you were received was given it’s full due – and not cut a second too short to honor the gift of your offering.

And then, ample breathing space was left before welcoming the next presenter.

Singers –

Which song, which verse, which camera angle, which pan – all this was closely and precisely tailored for an optimum visual and auditory delight.

Artists –

You who had slides, you who didn’t – your artwork must be showcased at its

maximum quality, evoking the beauty of your piece.

Under Carolyn’s watchful eye, we aspired to do justice to your work.

And so it went for weeks and months.

Deliciously working side by side with one who knew what she wanted,

and was willing to do what it took to get there –

Always with kindness, graciousness, and a spirit of collaboration.

From the foundation, to the framing, to the closing in and the laying of the sister joist, to the fine carpentry and finish with .000 sandpaper –

we bring you the fruit of that deep tending tonight. (How’s that for mixed metaphors!)

Thank you, Carolyn, for your

extraordinary attention to detail,

impeccable aesthetic,

and boundless, inspiring spirit.

I bow to your ‘maximum spaciousness’ school of editing!

This film has been midwived into the Arms of the Great Mother.
